“How would you describe yourself to someone who doesn’t know you?”
I am a poet before anything else, that’s what I was doing before I
got into music. I’m trying to maintain that energy in a certain way. The thing with poetry is that it’s always got a bad reputation and it can be considered corny, which is understandable. I think the subject matter is general. Same thing. When you see this, it’s immediately your cringe. I do understand that to a certain extent. But for me, my whole goal is to essentially just merge the two to make something that has substance and meaning but also sounds good musically. That’s generally just what the goal is.
“Would you say there is a main creative inspiration behind your work?”
Realistically, I just talk about whatever’s on my mind, whether that’s sociopolitical or just like stuff that’s happening in my life, or my friend’s lives. There’s nothing really that I can say that I specifically target. I don’t go into it thinking about specific topics, but if I feel inspired, I feel inspired. I wouldn’t say it’s people, I think it’s the collective.
“How would you say your upbringing around art and media has made an influence on your work, for example, Halo 3?”
I’m going to do that for as long as I can. I’m just going to sprinkle a little anime or gaming references into the song, because why not? Everything’s so serious, and I think I write about a lot of serious things. But I do like to balance it out occasionally with like, yeah I like to sit down and do stuff too. I don’t know if everyone else grew up watching the same kind of things that I did, but there was always some sort of messaging. Even like Spongebob, which is the stupidest show of all time. You could have taken certain things from it as a kid that might have been ingrained into you. I think we’ve kind of lost that in terms of our media, a lot of it has been lost. It’s just entertainment and algorithms and keeping people’s attention spans.
Back in the day, it was entertainment plus education. Agendas and all these things exist too, and people were doing that but at the same time, I think the whole purpose of art and media and all of these things that we find to be entertaining is that we ultimately learn something, or, it reminds us of something that makes us
human. When I meet people who say they don’t cry when they watch certain films, I’m like, bro, that’s the whole point of this, it’s supposed to elicit certain emotions. That’s the whole maintain that within our art and media, and that’s genuinely what I strive to do.
“What would you say is your favourite timeless fashion trend, and is
there any you miss?”
I didn’t care about fashion until a year ago, but I enjoy the fact that the majority of the population has abandoned skinny attire, like skinny jeans. I’m glad that we’ve moved to baggier. I’ve never understood it, I never got it.
“Do you think it will ever make a return?”
I would lead the charge to make sure that never happens again.
“What has been your most memorable fan interaction?”
It was the quickest one ever, and it was so funny. Kings Cross, we were shooting,
and this guy was on a run. He runs past me, he looks at me, and as he runs, he’s
like, yo, I love your music. He doesn’t even turn around to look at me, he’s just like, yo, I love your music, and then he almost falls into the water by the canal. I would have made an enemy that day, had he severely injured himself, because then he would associate meeting me with falling. It was good, it was funny to me, and it was nice.
“What is the weirdest/coolest thing in your home?”
My purple GameCube that I’ve had for about 20 years. I keep that safe. I bring it everywhere. Yeah. Weird. Yeah, the GameCube works. People would notice it,
and they’d be like, oh, you still have one of these. This is in pristine condition as well.
“In the creative space, who are 3 people who deserve more recognition?”
So Thrill Story, also known as Christoph Davis. He’s a great director from Trinidad.
Calvin Ceile, that’s my boy. He’s a photographer, a great photographer too, and deserves more love. I want to say Deema. There’s one more person to hold on to. Deema is cold.
